A new exhibit titled Keeping Score: The Life and Legacy of Dr. Virginia Apgar opens on Sunday, January 25, 2026 from 2-4 PM at headquarters of the Westfield Historical Society, 314 Mountain Avenue, Westfield, NJ. The exhibit will continue Sundays through 2026.
Virginia Apgar, born in Westfield in 1909, was a groundbreaking physician who developed a standardized test, now known as the APGAR Score, that is credited with saving the lives of countless newborn babies around the world.
The exhibit provides insight into her years in Westfield and her education at Mt Holyoke College and Columbia University. It details her pioneering work in anesthesiology and her time spent advocating for the prevention of congenital abnormalities.
Dr. Apgar had a wide range of interests and played multiple stringed instruments, cultivated gardens, enjoyed fly fishing, and traveled over two million miles in her lifetime.
She is a member of the Westfield Hall of Fame, the New Jersey Hall of Fame, the National Women’s Hall of Fame and was honored with her likeness on a US Postal Stamp in the Great American Series.
